Brooklyn-based Erstwhile Mezcal was founded in 2017 by Yuan Ji — an antitrust lawyer with a longstanding interest in social entrepreneurship and commitment to pro bono service — and Kevin J. Brown, a purveyor of antiquarian maps. They share a passion for the small batch production of exemplary Mezcal still produced in the tiny villages and family farms of central Mexico. Their mission is to discover, curate, and connect these fine Spirits with fellow lovers of the agave arts.

Erstwhile Tepeztate-Tobalá Ensamble Mezcal is a blend of two agave varietals — Tepeztate agave delivers notes of fresh green herbs, ripe pear, and earthiness and Tobalá agave brings a round, balanced sweetness. Master Mezcaleros Juan Hernández Méndez & Hortensia Hernández Martínez have crated a truly well-balanced Spirit with a complex flavor profile that’s an exceptional sipping dram. It’s distilled in exceptionally small batches in a copper alembic still and delivered to you at 44% ABV.

Smartass Corner:
Tepeztate agave plants (agave marmorata) are large, rounded plants with gnarled, turning spears that look like they are reaching out to grab you. The Spirit from this agave tends toward flavors of strong green herbs and pear notes.
