Privateer Rum True American is a combination of Johnny Depp and Paul Revere … young, brash, just a bit cocksure, and ready to shake things up. 
 
Privateer Rum plants its flag in the Revolution-era town of Ipswich, Massachusetts. What is a “privateer” you ask? Think of a privateer as a pirate with permission. A few hundred years ago it was fairly common for a governor or royal family to grant a “license” to a group of guys who would raid the ships and ports of their enemies. Arrrgh! 
 
The founders of Privateer Rum count as their ancestor one Andrew Cabot who operated a fleet of nimble ships that turned a handsome profit chasing down British vessels during the Revolutionary War. Privateer Rum currently produces three products: True American Amber Rum, Silver Reserve Rum, and Single Batch Release Gin. Interestingly, they have a really cool “Every Bottle Has A Story” section to their website where they post details and nuances about each batch. Them be a port to parley ‘bout your spirit, matey! 
 
The Privateer Andrew Cabot owned more than 25 ships, and one of them was named “True American.” Cool name and cool story, right? Imagine… sailing the high seas drinking Rum and hunting British supply ships… and it was all legal and even patriotic! Yo-Ho, Yo-Ho it’s the pirate life for me! It’s like being Johnny Depp AND Paul Revere at the same time. Anyway… 
 
Privateer Rum True American starts with their signature Silver Rum—distilled from BOTH molasses and brown sugar—and then… well, in true pirate fashion they age it a bit in whatever happens to be available at the time. That’s part of the magic and fun. There are new American oak barrels, some ex-Bourbon barrels, a Brandy cask or two, and … oh yes, there are some Sherry casks over there in the corner. You can go online and read the specifics about your particular bottle and it will be different with each batch. LOVE IT!
