Maggie's Farm 50/50 Dark Rum

A lively Dark Rum with roots in Pennsylvania and the Caribbean.

Tim Russell founded Allegheny Distilling right about 2013 after some bureaucratic delays getting state licensing and label approvals — it’s a long story. But let’s just say that Pennsylvania was not fully set up to help a Rum distillery get started quickly. The extra effort was met with enthusiastic support for his craft-made, small batch Rums. Those Rums are bottled under the Maggie’s Farm name plate and are made from Louisiana Turbinado sugar — as opposed to cane juice or molasses. They’ve recently ramped up production with new fermentation tanks and a new still, twice as large as the original to support their expanded line of ten premium Rums. And we suspect that more are on the way.

Maggie’s Farm 50/50 Dark Rum is an interesting blend. It starts with their own aged signature Rum married with an extra-aged molasses Rum from the Caribbean at a perfect 50/50 split. The combo is rested an additional six to nine months in oak to allow the Spirits to incorporate with each other in the cask. Lots of folks talk about “complexity,” but this is one of the best ways to get it. The Rum does not lose a thing… it gains more character. Lighter and fruitier from one, deep richness and earthiness from the other. And this fine Rum has the awards to prove it, including Gold and Double Gold Medals.
